BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Students with Brownsville Independent School District rang in Charro Days early with a mini-fiesta celebration Wednesday morning.

The mini-fiesta gathered students from seven elementary schools to perform dances for the community while dressed in traditional Charro Days attire.

Brownsville ISD has been participating in Charro Days since its establishment in 1938.

"It goes back to the culture," Jesus Chavez, Interim Superintendent with Brownsville ISD, said.

"We share that mutual culture not only of the great state of Texas and being here in the United States but also our heritage of our parents and our ancestors that come from Mexico," Chavez continued.

The students who performed in the mini-fiesta have been practicing for one month and will also participate in Brownsville ISD Children's Parade on Thursday.

Charro Days officially begins Thursday, Feb. 29.

Festivities for the 87th annual celebration will continue with multiple parades, dances and a carnival through Saturday, March 2.
