SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM MCALLEN TO HOST SPECIAL EVENT TO ANNOUNCE THE OFFICIAL NAME OF ITS NEW DA VINCI 5 ROBOTIC SURGICAL SYSTEM

Following a regional call for entries from elementary school-aged children, STHS McAllen is inviting the five ‘Name the Robot’ finalists to the facility for the reveal of the winning submission

By enhancing a surgeon’s ability to navigate complex anatomy and perform surgical procedures with increased precision, innovative robotic systems like the da Vinci 5 (DV5) Robotic Surgical System have changed the game in hospitals across the globe.

Through small incisions, robotic arms mimic a surgeon’s hand movements with enhanced steadiness, reducing the margin for error and allowing for minimally invasive techniques. The result: less pain, a quicker recovery time and overall improved patient outcomes.

Committed to better-quality patient outcomes, South Texas Health System McAllen – a Level 1 Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center – is expanding its minimally invasive surgical capabilities with the acquisition of the DV5, the latest in robotic-assisted surgical technology from Intuitive Surgical.

Designed to improve precision, efficiency and patient outcomes, the new surgical system possesses new and improved features like force feedback – a first of its kind technology allowing surgeons with varying experience levels to deliver up to 43% less force on tissue by sensing the push and pull forces at the instrument tip.

To celebrate the launch of the robotic surgery program at South Texas Health System McAllen and introduce this advanced technology to residents of the Rio Grande Valley, the facility launched a special community-wide initiative that invited elementary school-aged students to submit a name suggestion for the new robotic surgical system.

“This special contest is STHS’ way of incorporating the communities we proudly serve into this historic occasion for STHS McAllen while also helping inspire the next generation of healthcare heroes in the Rio Grande Valley,” says Tom Castaneda, System Director of Marketing and Public Relations, STHS. “After sharing photos of the DV5 online, we’ve managed to collect more than 100 entries from children across the region, and we’re excited to officially announce the winning name.”

On Thursday, April 10, STHS McAllen will host a special ceremony in the facility’s Private Dining Room, which is located on the first floor, where the four finalists will find out who has submitted the winning name.

Among the finalists are Sunnie, a fifth grader at IDEA Los Encinos Academy in McAllen; Salem, a homeschooled kindergartener from McAllen; Luka, a fourth grader at Gonzalez Elementary in McAllen; and Dominick, a homeschooled second grader from McAllen.

While the four finalists will receive some special tokens of appreciation from STHS McAllen, the winner will receive a special prize and get the opportunity to have their photo taken with the DV5 in its new home within STHS McAllen Surgical Services Department.
