SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM MCALLEN CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF 100TH ROBOTIC PROCEDURE THREE MONTHS AFTER ROBOTIC SURGERY PROGRAM LAUNCH

STHS McAllen hosted a special celebration for the surgeons and operating room staff instrumental in helping the facility reach its first milestone only three months after robotic surgery program

A revolutionary innovation in the healthcare industry, robotic surgery has redefined surgery by offering surgeons unparalleled precision and control while performing procedures in various surgical specialties, including general, gynecology, urology, cardiology and orthopedics.

Committed to providing high-quality, compassionate surgical services, South Texas Health System McAllen launched its robotic surgery program in March with the acquisition of the da Vinci 5 (DV5) Robotic Surgical System, the latest in surgical technology and innovation from Intuitive Surgical.

Used routinely in numerous laparoscopic soft-tissue procedures like gall bladder removals and hernia repairs, the DV5 features more than 150 design innovations and 10,000 times the computing power compared to Intuitive’s previous models, giving surgeons greater autonomy and reducing trauma, decreased blood loss and less pain on patients.

As one of the first hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley to acquire the da Vinci 5 (DV5), STHS McAllen reinforced its commitment to integrating advanced technologies aimed at improving patient outcomes while expanding access to top-tier surgical services for residents across the four-county region.

On June 10, only three months after launching its robotic surgery program, STHS McAllen reached its first milestone: the successful completion of its 100th robot-assisted surgical procedure with the new DV5, a gall bladder removal performed by Dr. Miguel Rodriguez, an STHS Clinics general and robotic surgeon who served as the program’s medical director.

“This milestone signifies more than just a number… It represents enhanced patient outcomes, strengthened community health and the growing capabilities at STHS McAllen,” says Emma Montes-Ewing, Chief Executive Officer, STHS McAllen. “Each one of these 100 surgeries represents quality of life restored for the patients and families who entrusted us with their care.”

To commemorate the important milestone, STHS McAllen leaders hosted a special celebration at the Radisson Hotel McAllen Airport on Tuesday, June 24, to recognize the 10 surgeons who helped the facility reach its first robotic surgery milestone: Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Krystha Cantu, Dr. Bob Saggi, Dr. Sandra Esquivel, Dr. Dustin Luebbers, Dr. Alberto Pena, Dr. Ana Vargas, Dr. Desmond Adamu and Dr. Haisar Dao Campi.

Additionally, STHS McAllen acknowledged the facility’s exceptional operating room staff members, led by Director of Surgical Services Sharon Martinez, for embracing the modern technology, providing instrumental support to the surgeons utilizing the DV5 and ensuring that every surgical procedure ran smoothly and efficiently.

“Achieving this milestone isn’t just about modern technology, it’s about empowering our community with the best care available,” says Dr. Miguel Rodriguez, Medical Director, Robotic Surgery Program, STHS McAllen. “This milestone puts STHS McAllen at the forefront of medical innovation in South Texas, reinforcing our mission to provide surgical excellence in the communities we proudly serve.”

Since reaching its 100th milestone robotic surgery procedure, the facility has since logged its 125th procedure with the DV5.
