HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Tom Castañeda discusses the South Texas Health System's annual "Chalk the Walk" event, a suicide prevention awareness initiative in the Rio Grande Valley.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is a serious health problem. A person commits suicide every 11 minutes in the United States, making it a leading cause of death in this country, especially among teens and young adults.

Community members are encouraged to chalk messages of hope and inspiration on their properties to raise awareness and combat the stigma around suicide.

The community is invited to submit chalk art, which involves chalking the entire parking lot at STHS Behavioral, on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., located at 2102 W. Trenton Rd. in Edinburg.
