MCALLEN, Texas – South Texas Health System Edinburg has officially opened its new home for outpatient rehabilitation services and it is more than double the size of the previous location.

The new location is 7112 N. 10th Street, Suite 120, McAllen.

With the new facility, the group is promising to provide a continuum of quality and compassionate care to the people of the Rio Grande Valley that goes beyond the hospital setting. The new location provides specialized programs to meet all patient needs, including a neurosciences program, dysphagia services and an orthopedic and sports medicine program.

To mark the grand opening of the center, STHS Edinburg held a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 29 that included the participation of STHS Edinburg leaders and staff. Also present was Edinburg City Councilmember Dan Diaz.

“We’re really excited to be able to welcome in the expansion of our Outpatient Rehabilitation Program for South Texas Health System Edinburgh and South Texas Health System Children’s. We have an incredible team that has dedicated themselves to building the best expertise in this area, and today, we get to give them an expanded space with upgraded equipment to really provide the best care for our patients in the community,” said Lance Ames, CEO of STHS-Edinburg and STHS-Children’s.

“What this is going to allow us to do is to be able to provide more access to care for our community. We’ve expanded our services to include physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy, so if you have needs in any of those areas, we are going to have a team member that’s able to spend time with you and help you have a personal plan to be rehabilitated to full functioning and independence in life. That’s what we’re passionate about, and we’re excited to be able to expand those services and have more appointment times available for our community members.”

Ames said STHS is “very committed” to taking care of every aspect of care for all of its patients and all of its community members, whether it’s preventing people going to the hospital or taking care of them while they are in the hospital.

“And also taking care of them after they’ve been in the hospital so they can really fully recuperate from any ailment or challenge they’ve been going through. So for South Texas Health System to add an outpatient rehabilitation center like this really shows our commitment to helping our community members within whatever phase of care they are at.”

Rosaura Rodea is a current patient at the center. She spoke during the ceremony.

“I feel so blessed to have received such attentive care from the staff. They are so thoughtful and make me feel so special,” Rodea said. “I feel myself getting stronger every day and it’s all thanks to their work. I receive personalized care and it really makes all the difference.”

Rick Flores, STHS Edinburg’s system rehab administrator said the new space, located in north McAllen, allows the outpatient rehabilitation team to increase its ability to provide enhanced physical, occupational and speech therapy to patients by 400 percent.

At the former STHS Edinburg Outpatient Rehabilitation Center location, Flores said, only two therapists could provide one-on-one treatment to patients at a given time. The new space is now staffed with ten highly skilled therapists, which allows for ten patients to receive individualized treatment at any given time during their one-on-one, hour-long session, Flores said, proudly.

“This approach ensures that each individual receives the specific care they need to rehabilitate effectively and return to their everyday lives,” Flores said. “Whether it’s a patient recovering from a stroke or someone healing from a sports injury, our commitment has always been to meet the diverse needs of our community, and this expanded space allows us to help even more patients.”

Isabel Garcia is therapy manager for STHS. Garcia said the new location provides specialized programs to meet all patient needs, including a neurosciences program, dysphagia services and an orthopedic and sports medicine program. Additionally, the center houses an expanded gym that features electric parallel bars, treadmills, leg press machines and additional equipment aimed at improving patient outcomes.

There’s also an orthopedic gym intended to better treat patients requiring a higher level of care, as well as athletes recovering from injury, Garcia said. The space features equipment like a SkiErg endurance machine, a rogue bike, a bench press and barbells to help enhance their workouts.

“This center is not just about treatment,” Garcia said. “It’s about building a knowledgeable and supportive community where everyone can thrive.”

Aside from providing much-needed rehabilitative treatment for sick, hurt or disabled patients, the new and enhanced STHS Edinburg Outpatient Rehabilitation Center also provides education and support for the family members of the patients it serves, Garcia added. This includes training on safe transfers between surfaces to ensure the well-being of our patients and their families.

The STHS Edinburg Outpatient Rehabilitation Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The facility offers no cost physical, occupational and speech therapy screenings to the community, which help determine if you may be a candidate for rehabilitative treatment. Simply call the center at 956-420-3800.
