STC offers helping hand to students, faculty and staff after storm

With historic rainfall last week across the Valley, South Texas College is reaching out to students, faculty and staff to check on their status and see what hardships they’re facing to provide aid and get them resources.

The college sent out a form, which can be found on their website and social media accounts, to determine what hardships people are facing such as transportation to classes, food, clothing or technology to help determine how STC can help.

STC Director of College Connections and Traditional Admissions Lazaro Barrozo said the form has been open since Sunday and the college has reached out to people in need.

“We’re wanting to let them know that we’re still committed to their success and our board and our college president really wanted students to know that we’re here to help them in any way that we can,” Barrozo said.

The form requires the individual’s name, phone number, STC identification number, the type of assistance needed and details about the situation.

So far, about 200 people have filled out the form since Sunday.

The assistance needed ranges from food, clothing, toiletries, transportation and technology for class assignments.

For food, clothing and toiletries, Barrozo said each of those needs will be available at each of their campuses.

For transportation or class assignments, STC is reaching out to faculty to let them know which student has been self identified to be affected so that the professor or instructor can work with the students on course work or availability.

STC is also aiding in technology assistance such as loss of a laptop. The college will help students that self identity that assistance and loan out devices for classes or assignments.

“We’re also connecting them with any community resources, helping to connect them and getting them more information to outside resources available to them and make sure they have information that they may need for long term support,” he said.

The resources at the college and outside as well can be found on the STC website.
