Two people were taken into custody Sunday after attempting to smuggle a spider monkey into the country illegally, a not uncommon occurrence at Rio Grande Valley ports.
Angel Arturo-Hernandez and Ashile Yaleczi Alejandro were attempting to enter the U.S. through the Anzalduas Port of Entry when their vehicle was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for a secondary inspection, according to a criminal complaint.
During the inspection of the vehicle border agents found a Mexican spider monkey inside a zippered pink bag.
Both told authorities they were aware it was illegal to import the spider monkey into the U.S. without a declaration or permit, which neither had.
They also told authorities that they had planned to deliver the monkey to an unidentified person in the U.S. at a location that wasn’t specified in the complaint.
The condition of the spider monkey wasn’t made clear in the complaint.
