SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With summer still bringing on the heat, families are heading to the beach to cool off and enjoy some time in the water. However, experts say it is important to keep safety a priority to ensure a good beach experience.
Grayson Rowe, who is a lifeguard for the city of South Padre Island, says there are several ways you can stay safe on the beach. Among these are to stay hydrated, always swim near a lifeguard, keep bare skin and animals off sand that may be too hot, and be cautious of getting in the water if you cannot swim.
He adds that ignoring safety measures could lead to dangerous outcomes.
“Beach safety is often overlooked, and we view it as a critical aspect to ensure the safety of the public here on South Padre Island, and we’re always pushing for more safety," Rowe said.
Rowe also shared exactly what to do if you find yourself being caught in a rip current.
“The best thing is to not panic and float on your back and wave for help if needed. There’s also a way to swim parallel to shore instead of fighting the current out. But swimming near a lifeguard is always going to be your best bet to ensure your safety on the beach.”
The easiest way to know the state of the water is to look at the colored flags located at each beach access. They are colored red, yellow, and purple depending on the conditions of the water.
Rowe says the lifeguards of South Padre Island are always ready to serve the community and assess anyone who may need medical attention. They are available for assistance from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
