EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Special Olympics Texas RGV Spring Games are underway in the city of Edinburg.

The city says nearly 2,000 athletes from across the Rio Grande Valley will compete in track and field events at Richard R. Flores Stadium on Thursday and Friday.

"When they are little, parents come and see them for the first time competing. They are sometimes surprised at how fast they can run, how good they can play basketball, or how good they can bowl, things like that. It's always fun to see the parents, volunteers, and friends just seeing what they can do. It's a very eye-opening experience for everyone who participates," said Lauro Garza, Area Director for Special Olympic Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Admission is free, and the community is encouraged to come out and support these athletes as they showcase their talents and sportsmanship.
