Southland Conference commissioner welcomes UTRGV

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With UTRGV Athletics recently announcing its move to the Southland Conference, the conference commissioner visited the ValleyCentral studio to discuss the details.

Commissioner Chris Grant said, "We're excited to have our 11th member in the Southland Conference. We now have six schools in Texas and five in Louisiana and it's just an exciting time. At UTRGV, academics come first then the student-athlete experience and that's the reason for the move. Keep your student-athletes home, closer in the classroom, graduating, pursuing their academic dreams, as well as being able to compete in front of friends and family."

Grant said community support is very important. Rally around your teams and cheer them on. "Get to know our student-athletes. Show up and support them and when our visiting teams come in from the Southland, show them what the Rio Grande Valley is all about," Grant said.
