AUSTIN, Texas – At least 81 people have died in connection with the flash floods that struck central Texas, according to officials.

The toll includes at least 28 children in Kerr County, where ten girls and one counselor from Camp Mystic are still unaccounted for, authorities said.

South Texas elected officials have sent their condolences to the families affected. Here are their comments:

State Sen. Juan Hinojosa:

“Governor Abbott has declared today, July 6th, A Day of Prayer for Texans impacted by devastating floods. The proclamation urges Texans of all faiths and religious traditions and backgrounds to offer prayers for the healing of individuals, safety of our first responders and public safety officers, rebuilding of communities, and restoration of the region struck by this disaster.

“Amanda and I join Governor Abbott in praying for the families who have lost loved ones in the floods. We especially pray for the little girls who are still missing and their families. We hope they can be located soon and offer our support and condolences to all those affected by this tragedy. In times like these, it is important for us to come together as a community and provide support for one another. Take a few minutes today to reflect and pray for these families.”

State Sen. Adam Hinojosa:

“Governor Abbott has proclaimed today a day of prayer for those affected by the devastating flooding in the Texas Hill Country. Please join me in praying for the families who are missing loved ones, those who have lost their homes, and the entire community as they face this tragedy.”

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen:

“The recent flooding in the Texas Hill Country has brought heartbreaking devastation to many. My thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the families and friends who have suffered loss. Moments like these remind us of the strength that comes from unity, compassion, and community support.

“Brownsville stands in solidarity with those who are grieving and with all the first responders and volunteers working tirelessly in the aftermath.

“The City of Brownsville is also contributing to the response. Yesterday afternoon, a crew of three along with an ambulance and a strike team leader was deployed to support the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.

“We are proud to stand with our fellow Texans in their time of need.’

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar:

“My heart breaks for the families in Kerr County. Many of the lives lost were children, and their absence leaves a deep and lasting sorrow. Our neighbors in TX-21 – in Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt, and Comfort – are facing unimaginable grief.

“Our first responders have answered this tragedy with strength and grace. They searched through the night and continue to serve with quiet heroism. May God bless the families who are grieving. May He bless the first responders who keep showing up. And may He bless every community working to heal.

“If you’re able to help, please do.”

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez:

“Lorena and I are heartbroken at the tragic flooding in Kerr County. We give our heartfelt condolences to the families of those lost, and pray for the safe recover of those missing, including 20 children. Thank you to our first responders for their bravery and response during this tragedy.”

U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz:

As a mother, my heart is broken for the families still searching for their loved ones after the devastating floods in Kerr County. May God protect those still missing, strengthen the rescuers, and comfort all who grieve. ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’ — Psalm 34:18″
