STHS General Medical Education Consortium

Dr. Youssef Majed, Designated Institutional Official and Chief Academic Officer of the STHS GME Consortium.

In other STHS news, the health system has officially established the STHS GME Consortium, a graduate medical education (GME) program.

As the sponsoring institution, South Texas Health System will oversee, support and administer several residency and fellowship programs, including its recently accredited Family Medicine Residency Program.

At a recent event at the Radisson in McAllen, STHS celebrated the accreditation of the consortium’s Family Medicine Residency Program and introduced its first cohort of ten medical residents who will take part in the post-graduate training program.

“By developing residency programs in different areas of specialized medicine, South Texas Health System will be able to attract talented medical residents seeking concentrated training and offer them the high-quality education they need to make their mark in the healthcare landscape,” said Dr. Youssef Majed, Designated Institutional Official and Chief Academic Officer of the STHS GME Consortium.

“Beyond providing vital training, the STHS GME Consortium’s programs will provide access to high quality care to Valley residents while fostering the development of new treatment options.”

According to the Texas Medical Association, the physician shortage in Texas endures, with the state’s ratio of 204.6 patient care physicians per 100,000 people remaining well below the national average of 247.5.

As for the Rio Grande Valley, it has the highest need for physicians, with the shortage of full-time equivalent primary care physicians expected to increase from 423 to 722 by 2030, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Majed said STHS plans to add more specialized residency programs within the next two years, with the aim of hosting between 200 and 300 medical residents by 2026 and providing them with the clinical training, research knowledge, professionalism and critical skills necessary to become well-rounded, compassionate physicians who will positively impact the health and well-being of Valley communities.

“South Texas Health System is making history. It is not will make history, it is making history,” Majed said at the launch of STHS GME Consortium. “

“That history started three years ago and what you see today is just some of the results. This is about ten percent to July 2024 of what we have in the pipeline. I have no doubt and please mark my words, South Texas Health System will become the largest academic institution from here to the Houston.”

Majed said that through a concentrated and rigorous training program, STHS GME Consortium believes it will keep most of the residents in the Rio Grande Valley.

He pointed to studies which show that the place where doctors do their residencies has a significant impact on where they practice after completing their training. Approximately 57 percent of medical residents continue to practice in the state where they completed their residencies, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.
