SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of South Padre Island Environmental Health Services Department is hosting an Earth Day E-Waste Recycling Event.

The event is taking place from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the community center, located at 4501 Padre Boulevard.

“This is a great opportunity for our community to dispose of electronics properly,” said J. Victor Baldovinos, Environmental Health Director. “By participating, we are reducing the negative impact that improper e-waste disposal would otherwise have on our delicate environment.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States discards an estimated 2.7 million tons of cell phones, computers, hard copy peripherals (which include printers, scanners and faxes) and televisions.

Chemicals such as lead, cadmium and mercury are found in electronic waste, which is extremely hazardous to our health.

The SPI EHSD and its partners are hosting the e-recycling event in hopes for the community to have an opportunity for safe and responsible recycling of unwanted electronics.

City officials encourage the community to bring all their unwanted electronics and regular recycling to their event.
