WESLACO, Texas – Javier Solis is assistant director of public safety for the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council.
Thanks to his connections with the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association, Solis has been able to secure a training program for canines and their handlers attached to local law enforcement agencies whereby they learn how to sniff fentanyl. At the moment, in the RGV, only Customs and Border Patrol have canines with this capability.
Solis said this training will be invaluable. “The most important thing about this training is that it provides the officers attending that training an opportunity to come away with a certification for them and their canines to be able to provide testimonial evidence that their dogs are trained to actually detect the odor of fentanyl,” Solis said.
The training will take place in Brownsville between the 16th and 18th of August.
