Social media safety tips for parents as new school year begins

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — As the new school year gets underway in the Rio Grande Valley, parents are eager to share photos of their kids over social media.

However, law enforcement warns against sharing too many details where online predators can easily see that private information.

"We're trying to spread awareness. We're not trying to spread panic. We want parents to be aware of what to post, especially with back to school, just to keep some information off social media," said Eric Cantu, Hidalgo County Office of Emergency Management.

Cantu said they want parents to be aware that there is some risk of putting identifiable information, such as full names, the full name of their school, the teacher's name, and grade level.

But what is acceptable? Do use a safe backdrop, leave details out of the frame, and focus on their smile, according to Cantu.

Cantu urges parents to be aware of their child's surroundings and that they are always welcome to reach out to law enforcement for assistance.
