Sharyland High School alum Eric Holguín announced his bid for Texas House District 41 earlier this week.
Holguín, a democrat, made the announcement Wednesday — the same day Valley attorney Sergio Sanchez announced he's running as a Republican to represent District 41, which covers parts of McAllen, Mission, Edinburg and Pharr.
Holguín currently serves as policy director for a national Hispanic civil rights organization.
“I’m running for State Representative because our community can’t afford any more spectators who just sit on the sidelines," Holguín stated in a news release. "Too many families & small businesses are hurting because of the cruel & costly policies of Greg Abbott and Donald Trump. From investing in childcare access to lowering property taxes by having the state fund more of our public schools, to building more homes that people can afford and innovative job growth, the Texas Legislature needs to focus on improving Texans’ lives instead of constantly finding ways to punish us.”
Holguín looks to center his campaign around three priorities:
● Stronger Paychecks: Secure innovative and diverse jobs that bring higher wages so working families can get ahead. This includes getting ahead of AI in the Valley.
● Lower Costs: Deliver property tax relief by having the state fund more of our public schools, cap prescription drug prices, and reduce the cost of living for renters and homeowners alike.
● Fair Opportunity: Invest in public education, expand.
Victor ‘Seby’ Haddad, McAllen City Commissioner District 5, has also announced his bid for the seat.
Texas Rep. R.D. “Bobby” Guerra (D-McAllen) said he will not be seeking reelection.
