Sentencing underway for driver in 2022 deadly DWI crash

ALTON, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A jury has found the driver who was charged with intoxication manslaughter in a 2022 crash guilty on counts one and two of the indictment.

Daniel Sustaita was also charged with possession of a controlled substance in the deadly crash that killed 21-year-old Christopher Moses Garcia and 21-year-old Karen Espino.

Garcia and Espino were killed on March 11, 2022, while stopped at a red light near 5 Mile Line Road and Steward Boulevard when Sustaita struck the back of their vehicle.

Court documents show the Sustaita possessed less than four grams of cocaine at the time of the crash.

Sustaita was transferred to a hospital due to his injuries and arrested after his medical release, 10 days after the crash occurred.

He was issued a $2 million bond for both intoxication manslaughter charges and an additional $15,000 bond for the controlled substance charge.

Jury selection for his trial was completed on Tuesday.

Hidalgo County records indicate that the trial began on Wednesday and is still underway.

On Thursday, a jury found him guilty on counts one and two of the indictment. VallyeCentral is working to learn Sustaita's sentencing, which is being deliberated Friday.
