SAN BENITO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of San Benito has begun testing its outdoor emergency warning siren for the first time in 20 years for the safety of residents.

On Tuesday morning, the city successfully tested the warning siren system, located behind the City Hall at 485 N Sam Houston Blvd.

Al Wasielewski, San Benito's utilities inspector, says he is pursuing national companies that have outdoor systems to supply him with a system that will cover the entire San Benito. Once that is completed, the city of San Benito's website will inform residents of the significance of each sound.

"With the scare up in Kerrville in Kerr County, we need to take action to protect the citizens of San Benito. The Texas legislature and federal government are working on making it mandatory that cities do something to have a system," Wasielewski said.

The city of San Benito announced on their Facebook page that a brief ten-second test will take place daily at 12 p.m., as the system is upgraded with new technology and coverage is expanded across the city.

"We’ll share upcoming test times and updates now and in the future," the city of San Benito stated on its Facebook page.
