San Benito man killed in firey speeding crash

SAN BENITO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety says a San Benito man is died when he lost control of his speeding car and crashed into a ditch.

The accident happened at 9 p.m. on Friday near Green Valley Farms Street and Crab Hotel Lane, which is southeast of San Benito.

DPS troopers say 30-year-old Eriberto Montanez was speeding as he drove a Mercedes Benz southbound on Green Valley Farms Street. They say for some unknown reason he veered off the road, hit a ditch and then the car caught fire and burst into flames.

A passerby pulled Montanez out of the burning car, but he died at the scene.

The accident is under investigation.
