Sams Memorial Stadium undergoes summer-long renovation

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville will undergo renovations this summer.

The Brownsville Independent School District plans to convert the stadium from a football, track, and field facility into a football and soccer complex.

Once complete, the renovated stadium will be used for soccer matches, BISD boys' varsity and UTRGV football games.

"We went with a higher quality turf to accommodate the higher level of competition," said BISD Athletic Director Gilbert Leal.

The $3.1 million renovation project began on June 10 and will continue through the last week of August.

Leal estimates the field will be clear for practice and games starting next year.
