SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai gave the welcome remarks at the South Texas Business Partnership’s 2025 South Texas Summit.
The event took place at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Antonio Brooks Hotel & Spa on June 9, 2025.
In his remarks, Sakai spoke about his upbringing in the Rio Grande Valley, treating immigrants with respect, regional collaboration, and his support for high speed rail between San Antonio, the South Texas border region, and into Mexico.
“One of the things that I want to put on the table is that the country of Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum, has advocated for… we know that she’s committed to expand high speed rail from Mexico City to the border, specifically to the Colombia Bridge,” Sakai said.
“I see an opportunity to have that discussion start here and figure out what is possible. We know that we have to have solutions to handle the bottleneck on Interstate 35. We need to work together on common goals of infrastructure.
“We know that Laredo is the biggest inland port… and we know that Interstate 35 is choked up with traffic. Do we just build more lanes, or do we look to multimodal transportation and look at possible rail projects? Let’s start the conversation.”
