S B Wings: Good menu by Greyhound superfans

SAN BENITO — In the silent time and the slow time of the day, the restaurant offers a peace and a solitude which calms the busy mind.

Only one patron occupies a small table at S B Wings at 498 E. Business 77, and he sits alone. The waiter welcomes me with a smile and says, “Anywhere! Anywhere!”

I take a table against a window with yellow valances, and the waiter puts a menu in front of me and brings a tall glass of water. I look over the menu and it is a very good menu and a simple one.

The long list of wing combos share the purple and gold menu with a list of burgers: classic burger, cheese burger, avocado burger, mushroom burger, chili cheese burger …

There is also the intriguing item “touchdown taco.” This highlights the overall theme of the restaurant with the purple and gold layout of the menu and the yellow sunflowers on the tables and the purple shelf where the TV sits. Images of the iconic greyhound and in a dead heat adorn the restaurant and the menu.

This all announces most clearly that S B Wings is a fiercely loyal fan of San Benito High School and its Greyhound football team and its marching band. I find this most charming and refreshing, a restaurant that has been here many years and so supportive in a grand way of the local community.

I finally decide on the six-wing combo and absorb more the nuances of the silences and the whispers of the fans spinning over the dining room.

I appreciate the simplicity of this place, the wooden walls peppered with age spots or perhaps beauty marks or maybe both. The tables are not formal and the seats are not formal and so it has a familiarity that I appreciate.

I think at first that even though I have never been here it still feels familiar because it is the kind of place to which I can most relate. However, after a few minutes of looking into a separate and smaller dining room and see again the Mighty Greyhound running across the wall, I think I have been here.

As the quiet and the slowness liberates my mind, the memory becomes clear and I recall sitting in that dining room with a group of friends. One of them is my dear friend Prof. Enriqueta Lopez Ramos. I do not recall who else was there or what we talked about, but it is a fine memory and I’m glad my visit today at S B Wings has allowed me to remember it again.

My appetizer arrives, warm chips in a creamy guacamole. I begin scooping up guacamole with my chips, but after consuming two chips my wing order appears before me.

It is a large meal and a fine one with wings glistening in sauce and a nice stack of French fries and it is very warming and good. I am glad I have chosen wings. I can get a burger anytime, but wings I have had only on rare occasions.

At this moment a bell rings and a waiter says, “Buenas tardes.”

“Hello,” answers one of the women who have just arrived.

“Pasale,” he says, and you can hear the smile in his voice.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
