BROWNSVILLE, Texas – If, as the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation wants, more high tech companies are recruited to Brownsville, Texas Southmost College will have a key role to play.
TSC’s president, Dr. Jesús Roberto Rodríguez, says the college is working hard to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. The Rio Grande Guardian International News Service caught up with Dr. Rodríguez at GBIC’s recent Rally in the Valley event.
“We do play an integral part with regard to economic development. So, when GBIC is exploring possibilities of bringing new employers to our region, we partner with them. They’re a wonderful partner,” Rodríguez said.
“If they say, hey, would you be able to do this workforce development? Can you create this? The answer to it is always, yes. We will adapt, whether it be customized corporate training, whether it be a credit or a continuing education workforce program, we adapt to the needs of the employer so we can train our workforce to land that job that leads to that career.”
Rodríguez said TSC was excited to be part of Rally in the Valley. Around 400 high school students participated, exploring employment opportunities with major employers in the region.
“Some of these students know what they want, so they are looking for that internship, that apprenticeship, that certificate, while others are exploring something that might ignite their interest.”
The Guardian also spoke to Rodríguez about TCS’s big milestone. The region’s oldest higher education institution is 100 years old next year. Here is the interview:
