Rio Grande City man dies by suicide during traffic stop

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A routine traffic stop in Rio Grande City turned out to be anything but, when a vehicle pursuit ended in the death of a Valley man by suicide.

Just after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper attempted to stop a white Ford F-150 pickup truck, occupied by Rio Grande City resident John Acevedo, 34.

Authorities say Acevedo made a traffic violation while driving and refused to stop his vehicle when he saw the flashing lights behind him.

After running away from authorities for some time Acevedo stopped his vehicle at a residence on E. Hidalgo Street.

When troopers approached his truck, they found Acevedo dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Texas Rangers are investigating this case.
