BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Several hundred students from Cameron County participated in what is known as Texas Southmost College Signing Day.

The event was held in conjunction with National CTE Letter of Intent Signing Day and it’s held to give incentives to students to attend higher educational schools.

Locally, it took place Thursday, April 10, at TSC’s ITEC Center in Brownsville.

The college is offering scholarships of up $500 and any student interested in enrolling at TSC must register no later than April 30 to qualify for the financial incentive.

The signing day included the participation of several employers that are either hiring right now or later on.

Among them were NextDecade, Bechtel, Noble Texas Builders, Coca Cola, Kiewit Corp., of Ingleside, and the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.

TSC set up several tables to let the students know some of the degrees it offers in health care and technical careers.

The 240-plus students came from school districts in Brownsville, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, San Benito and from IDEA Public Schools, among others.

Joel Ruiz, Ruby Morales and Miguel Chavez signed letters of intent to attend TSC.

They said they plan to go after associate degrees in automobile technology, oceanography and in respiratory therapy, respectively.

Sebastian Silva, another student, said he will study air conditioning. “This runs in the family and I am already working in this field,” he said. “I might as well go to college and make bigger money.”

TSC officials said students getting a two-year technical degree are in big demand because this is what many employers are looking today.

“We have several industries and some of our donors participating today,” David Plummer, TSC vice-president of student development, said. “These are the industries of the future.”

Jesus Roberto Rodriguez, the TSC president, said he could not stress enough the importance of getting a technical degree today.

“We are a comprehensive community college,” he said. “What we address here is an entire spectrum of programs.”

Rodriguez told the students that they are moving in the right direction and what they are doing today is great.

“If you want a good job, a good career, come to TSC,” he said. “This is your community college.”
