HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Police departments across the Rio Grande Valley are ramping up their patrols as part of "Operation Slow Down".
The goal is to ensure that drivers follow the speed limit and obey the Move Over Law.
It requires drivers to clear the lane where there is a vehicle pulled over. If you are unable to switch lanes, you must slow down at least 20 miles per hour below the speed limit to safely pass.
Law enforcement officials say the law aims to save lives.
"If we all drive safely and drive for the purpose of driving, we can reduce the fatalities out there, we can reduce the collisions, the accidents. Speed is a major contributor to accidents, and it's also one of the major contributors to fatalities on the roadway," said Sgt. Salvador Carmona, Harlingen Police Department.
Violators can face a penalty ranging from $200 or higher, depending on the circumstances. Operation Slow Down runs through Aug. 3.
