CORPUS CHRISTI — The PSJA High Bears built a five run lead through four innings and didn’t look back Thursday, cruising past the Schertz-Clemens Buffalos 8-4 during Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 6A DI area round series at Tuloso-Midway High School in Corpus Christi.
The Bears opened up the scoring during the top of the second, with PSJA High senior Ryan Vallejo recording the RBI single to bring in James Cansino to make it 1-0. The run was the first of four for PSJA High during the inning.
Zeke Garza brought in Sebastian Plascencia to make it 2-0 on the ensuing at bat, with Vallejo adding to the score on an error by the Buffalos defense. An RBI single by Nyles Alvarez extended PSJA High’s lead to 4-0 after two innings of play.
The Buffalos cut their deficit to three during the bottom of the second, with Xavier Terry recording the RBI double to make it 4-1. The Bears responded with a pair of runs during the top of the third and the top of the fourth to take an comfortable 8-3 lead after four.
A wild pitch by PSJA High brought the Buffalos within four during the bottom of the fifth, but nothing else would come, with PSJA High holding on for the Game 1 victory.
Jesse Garza got the win on the mound for the Bears, striking out eight in six innings pitched. Nyles Alvarez came in during the seventh to close out the game, striking out one.
The series continues at Tuloso-Midway High School tomorrow, with Game 2 set for 5 p.m. Game 3 is slated to begin 30 minutes after, if necessary.
Class 6A DI
Laredo United South 2, Los Fresnos 1: At Roma, the Falcons were unable to erase a two-run hole, falling during Game 1 of a Class 6A DI best-of-3 area round series. The Panthers struck first during the bottom of the third, with senior Oscar Rodriguez hitting a hard ground ball to second base to bring in Alfonso Ramirez. United South added another run during the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Alex Galvan to make it 2-0. The Falcons cut into the deficit during the top of the 5th, with senior Sebastian Barrera scoring on an error by the Panthers’ left fielder. Los Fresnos wouldn’t get any closer, with the Panthers keeping the Falcons off the board to take a 1-0 series advantage. Game 2 is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Roma High School, with Game 3 slated for 3 p.m. Saturday if necessary.
Class 5A DI
Corpus Christi Veterans 2, PSJA North 0: At Corpus Christi, Eagles’ senior Zach Hampton struck out 12 batters to give CC Veterans a 1-0 series lead over the Raiders in a best-of-3 Class 5A area round series. Hits were hard to come by during the matchup, with the two teams combining for just eight. The Eagles made the most of their hits, however, with their first of the game turning into a solo home run by junior Trae Hernandez during the bottom of the third. A bunt by Aaron Gonzalez in the bottom of the fourth brought in the Eagles second run of the day, with Davian Garcia scoring. The series returns to PSJA North for the next two games, with Game 2 set for 6 p.m. Friday and Game 3 set for 3 p.m. Saturday, if necessary.
Class 3A DII
Orange Grove 12, Lyford 0: At Hebbronville, Orange Grove poured seven runs on Lyford in the first inning and didn’t look back, taking a 1-0 series lead over the Bulldogs in a best-of-3 Class 3A DII area round series. Orange Grove’s Daniel Martinez, Zach Starns and Zach Wright paced the way for their team, each recording two hits during the win. Starns and Wright each added an RBI. Meanwhile, Eliazar Arias and Starns held it down on the mound, allowing just one hit in a combined five innings. The series shifts to Cabaniss for Game 2, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. Game 3 is set for 30 minutes after, if necessary.
