CORPUS CHRISTI — La Joya Juarez-Lincoln found some late-game magic on Tuesday to earn its spot in the Sweet 16, and on Friday, the Huskies came through in the clutch once again to punch their ticket to the Elite 8.
The Juarez-Lincoln Huskies scored two second half goals to take down the Cedar Park Timberwolves 2-1 in their Region IV-5A DII Semifinal on Friday at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi.
La Joya Juarez-Lincoln (14-8-3) advances to next week’s Region IV-5A DII Final to face Liberty Hill (13-7-7). Game details are to be determined. Liberty Hill defeated Brownsville Lopez 2-0 on Friday to earn its spot in the regional final.
The Huskies and Timberwolves played a scoreless first half but Cedar Park got on the board early in the second as Mortiz Remark scored off a throw-in in the 47th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Juarez-Lincoln answered almost immediately as a free kick by forward Jovany Martinez from 24 yards out bent around and past the Cedar Park goalkeeper for the equalizer in the 49th minute.
The Huskies took the lead in the 66th minute after a throw-in by Steven Hernandez landed at the feet of teammate Eduardo Ramos in the penalty box. He turned and sent a low shot towards the goal that bounced off a defender and into the back of the net for the 2-1 Juarez-Lincoln lead.
Cedar Park had one last chance at a goal with a free kick from 45 yards out with 17 seconds remaining, but the pass into the box was headed over the Juarez-Lincoln goal as the game went final.
CLASS 6A DI
LAKE TRAVIS 3, LOS FRESNOS 1: At Rockport, the Cavaliers scored three second half goals to end the Falcons season in the Region IV-6A DI semifinals.
Lake Travis advances to the Region IV-6A DI finals to take on Cedar Park Vista Ridge, who defeated Edinburg Economedes 7-1 on Friday.
Los Fresnos took the first half lead over Lake Travis thanks to a successful penalty kick by Leo Perez. The goal proved to be the only one of the match for the Falcons, nearly getting close on several other occasions but unable to convert.
The Falcons finish their season with a 20-4-1 overall record, winning the District 32-6A title and becoming the first Los Fresnos boys soccer squad to advance to the Sweet 16.
CLASS 6A DIVISION II
AUSTIN BOWIE 2, BROWNSVILLE VETERANS 0: At Corpus Christi, the Bulldogs scored two first-half goals and played sound second-half defense to defeat the Chargers on Friday at Cabaniss Athletic Complex.
Bowie (16-7-2) moves on to face Austin Vandegrift in next week’s Region IV-6A DII Final. Brownsville Veterans finishes its season 15-10-1 overall.
Bowie’s Django Van Brunt received a pass off a corner kick and punched it in during the 35th minute and a free kick from Jack Andre found the back of the net during the 37th minute.
CLASS 5A DI
LEANDER GLENN 1, BROWNSVILLE RIVERA 0: At San Antonio, the Grizzlies’ Tito Don Juan scored the game’s lone goal with just three minutes remaining as the Grizzlies held off the Raiders in the Region IV-5A DI semifinals.
The win advances Glenn to the regional finals for a second straight year. They’ll take on the winner of tomorrow’s game between Harlingen South and San Antonio Southwest.
The Raiders finish the year with a 17-4-4 overall mark, reaching the regional semifinals for the second time in the past three years.
CLASS 4A DII
FREDERICKSBURG 3, IDEA EDINBURG QUEST 0: At San Antonio, the Trailblazers historic season came to an end, falling in the third round of the postseason for a second straight year.
IDEA Quest finishes its season with a 14-7-0 overall record, earning a pair of playoff wins for a second straight year. Their Sweet 16 appearance was the first in program history for the soccer club.
