BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A $20,000 donation has been made to Texas Southmost College’s nursing program by Brownsville philanthropist and retired businessman Steven De La Garza.
The donation was facilitated in partnership with the Rio Grande Valley Philanthropic Foundation.
De la Garza, a longtime supporter of technical and workforce education in the Rio Grande Valley, has spent years championing opportunities that empower students and strengthen the region’s economy.
To date, De la Garza has donated more than $200,000 in support of various programs across TSC, further underscoring his deep investment in the region’s educational and economic future.

He said his latest donation reflects his belief in the vital role that nurses play in community health, and his ongoing commitment to ensuring students have the tools they need to succeed.
“They (the donations) open doors for our youth—it’s that simple,” stated De la Garza. “It gives them direction, a place to go and skills to learn. They can then go on to take their place in society and become leaders in our growing economy.”
College leaders said the donation reinforces the community’s ongoing investment in the future of local healthcare.
The contribution was officially awarded during a special check presentation ceremony held at the TSC International Technology, Education and Commerce Center. Here is a video TSC produced from the presentation event:
