CORPUS CHRISTI — Sharyland High gave up a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth inning as they fell 2-1 against the Boerne Champion Chargers during Game 1 of a best-of-three Region IV-5A DII semifinal series Thursday at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi.

The Chargers take a 1-0 series lead with the win. The Rattlers will look to extend the series during Game 2 tomorrow at Cabaniss Field.

Sharyland High struck first Thursday, with Luis Cienfuegos bringing in Sergio Ibarra during the bottom of the second to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.

A defensive battle ensued after the Rattlers’ run, with neither team able to muster offense during the tightly contested contest. A wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth end the scoring drought, with Boerne Champion senior Sam Miller tying the game 1-1.

Another error by the Rattlers gave the Chargers the lead during the bottom of the sixth, with Sawyer Smith hitting a fly ball to reach first and bring in Caiden Cruz to make it 2-1.

After taking the lead, the Chargers retired the order during the top of the seventh, securing the Game 1 victory.

The Rattlers will look to tie the series during Game 2 on Friday at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. A Sharyland High win forces a Game 3 on Saturday, with the contest slated for 1 p.m. at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi.
