PROGRESO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — After two weeks in jail the mayor of Progreso may be released on bond if he resigns.
Agents with homeland security investigations arrested Mayor Gerardo "Jerry" Alanis in March.
Alanis is accused of participating in a scheme to store drugs at a middle school.
After his arrest, a federal magistrate judge decided Alanis was a danger to the community and should remain in jail.
Alanis appealed the decision to S.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr.
Today, Judge Rodriguez overruled the magistrate judge and set bond at $100,000.
To be released, Alanis must post $10,000 deposit and resign from his position as mayor.
He is also prohibited from working for the City of Progreso or the Progreso school district and must submit to electronic monitoring. Alanis was fired by the school district.
