HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Dock renovations at the Port of Harlingen are underway. They were made possible with a $3.9 million grant awarded in 2022 by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Division Port Infrastructure Development Grant Project.

Docks one and two, which were originally built in the 1950s, have not had any rehabilitation since the early 1990s, according to the port.

"We're renovating our main docks, one and two, rehabbing some cracks, and redoing the fendering system that the barges utilize to more up to the dock. We will be replacing that. We're replacing some of the old infrastructure tie-backs that hold the dock secure to the land, and repairing all of those that are of critical infrastructure to the docks," said Port Director Walker Smith.

The rehabilitation project is set to be completed in the spring of 2026. Renovations to the docks will be done in phases to minimize impact on current barge and commodity traffic.
