The Edinburg school district said in a Tuesday afternoon news release that authorities found an unloaded gun in a student’s backpack at Edinburg North High School.

The firearm was found Tuesday morning.

“The student was immediately detained, and local law enforcement made an arrest,” the release stated.

The district stressed that there was no threat to students or staff and that everyone on campus remained safe and secure.

Authorities added that district police followed established safety protocols and will continue to review and reinforce those procedures.

“Out of an abundance of caution, additional safety measures will remain in place for the new future,” the release stated. “We also remind families and students that reporting concerns—whether in person or anonymously—helps keep our campuses safe.

“The safety of our students is our highest priority.”

Anyone with questions is asked to call the district at (956) 289-2300.
