HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Harlingen and San Benito police departments helped serve some tables at Texas Road House for the special 'Tip-A-Cop' program, benefitting the Special Olympics Texas.

On Thursday, Texas Roadhouse in Harlingen teamed up with local police departments to explain what Special Olympics is about and ask customers for donations that will go directly to the state-wide organization.

Lauro Garza, Area Director for Special Olympics Texas Grande Valley of Laredo, says the annual event has partnered up with every Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Texas for more than 20 years.

"We're acquiring resources and funds for our athletes. Here in the Rio Grande Valley, we serve over 20,000 athletes throughout the year in a myriad of sports," said Garza.

"This is what all this is about, to make sure that we create spaces for people with intellectual disabilities, and so it's very important that the community comes out, and our community partners, like Dick's warehouse and the police departments, come and help us put on these events."
