Police arrest man wanted in theft of ambulance

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Brownsville police have arrested the man who was involved in an ambulance theft on Aug. 4.

According to the Brownsville Police Department, 31-year-old Jesus Gilberto Hernandez was turned over to Homeland Security Investigation Agents by Mexican authorities at the McAllen/Hidalgo International Bridge and then turned over to Brownsville police.

Hernandez was arraigned and charged with theft of property. His bond is set at $225,000.

Background

At 7:05 a.m. on Aug. 4, the Brownsville Fire Department responded to the 2000 block of International Boulevard.

According to police, a man, later identified as Hernandez, was complaining of abdominal pain and requested to be taken to the hospital.

Hernandez later jumped into the driver’s seat of the ambulance and drove away from the scene. Abril Luna, Public Information Officer for the Brownsville Police Department, said, Hernandez drove the ambulance toward the International Border to Mexico, where it crashed into the barriers.

At 3:17 p.m. Aug. 4, Brownsville police said in an update, that the stolen ambulance had been safely recovered by Mexican authorities and was brought back to the U.S.
