Point Isabel ISD unveils facility for Special Education students

PORT ISABEL, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Point Isabel Independent School District announced the grand opening of the Tarpon Lighthouse.

The district's news release says the state-of-the-art facility is designed to support its Special Education 18+ program.

The Tarpon Lighthouse is a carefully crafted replica of a home designed to provide students with hands-on life skill training. It is dedicated to empowering students by equipping them with essential skills that will serve them well beyond their time at Point Isabel ISD.

Two UTRGV programs recognized on U.S. News and World Report

Features of the Tarpon Lighthouse include:

  • Craft Room: A creative space for students to engage in arts and crafts.
  • Computer Lab: Providing access to technology and digital literacy training.
  • Outdoor Landscaping: Teaching students about gardening and outdoor maintenance.
  • Two Bedrooms: Designed for practicing essential living skills such as making beds and cleaning.
  • Wash Room: For learning laundry skills and other household chores.
  • Practical instruction and training area for various real-life scenarios.

“We believe every student deserves the opportunity to develop the skills necessary for a successful and independent future. This facility will play a crucial role in making that happen," said Superintendent Terri Capistran.

The community is invited to the unveiling ceremony at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, behind Port Isabel Junior High School at 17001 TX-100.
