PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Pharr announced the construction of a lift station to improve sewer quality.

The project was given one million dollars in federal funds.

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz recently signed a bill that appropriated over seven million in community funds for Pharr projects.

“We receive projects from all over the district. In District 15, there are seven counties, over 700,000 people. So you can imagine there’s a lot of need here," she said.

This includes the lift station or “pumping station” in northern Pharr, which will redirect more sewage water into underground units.

“It’s a much-needed infrastructure project for any type of community, especially when you’re dealing with sewer water, and so every city has multiple lift stations within their community and those are needed, especially when your population continues to grow," said Assistant City Manager Cynthia Garza Reyes.

Cynthia Garza Reyes says this will go beyond helping Pharr’s sewage problem.

“It has the potential to connect communities as well. Not only the city of Pharr, but potentially connecting any assistance to the city of Edinburg they might need in the future, and any assistance McAllen might need in the future as well.”

Congresswoman De La Cruz agrees, quoting the mayor for its wider impact inland.

"It not only impacts the city of Pharr, but also Edinburg and McAllen.”

Other projects coming to Pharr include the Liberty Road extension and a new facility for the Angels of Love program.
