PD: UTRGV basketball player charged with assault after fight during pickup game

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A University of Texas Rio Grande Valley basketball player was arrested on an assault charge following an altercation during a pickup game, police said.

Saliou Seye was arrested by UTRGV police on a charge of assault impede breath/circulation, according to Hidalgo County records.

At 3:28 p.m. Saturday, police received a call regarding an assault at the Recreation Center in Edinburg. According to police, two students were playing a pickup basketball game, which led to an altercation.

Police told ValleyCentral that Seye put his hands on the victim's throat, impeding his breath. No weapons were used and Seye was taken into custody. EMS was not called.

ValleyCentral reached out to UTRGV, which provided the following statement:

We are aware of the incident involving a member of the UTRGV men's basketball team and students at the University Recreation Center. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.

Currently, we are actively investigating the situation. As this is an ongoing matter, we will refrain from providing further comment until the investigation is complete.

A previous UTRGV post described Seye, who was born in Dakar, Senegal, as an "extremely athletic" 7-foot shot blocker. Seye, who is now a junior, averaged 3.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in one season with UTRGV.

Seye was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on Sunday and his bond was set at $15,000. Records show he remains jailed, as of Monday.

The case remains under investigation.
