EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An anti-bullying protest was led outside of IDEA Edinburg on Wednesday after a video surfaced of a fight on school grounds.
Esther Akindayomi claims her godson Miracle was the victim in the video and is working to bring justice and raise awareness on anti-bullying.
"We're really here to bring awareness about this issue," Akindayomi said. "It's our duty as community leaders, school leaders, as district leaders, to be able to show and be examples to these kids. Where is love? Where is kindness? Where is peace? Where is compassion?"
Akindayomi claims IDEA Edinburg did not respond efficiently to the situation.
IDEA Public Schools responded to ValleyCentral on the alleged bullying incident, claiming it as an "altercation."
IDEA Edinburg is aware of an altercation that took place in the cafeteria yesterday. The incident is currently under investigation. IDEA Public Schools does not condone bullying or physical violence. We are committed to ensuring a safe environment for our students and staff.
IDEA Public SchoolsAkindayomi claims IDEA is downplaying what happened to her godson.
"That was an assault. My child never raised his hand. The boy kept beating on him," she said. "When you downplay then you don't even let the kids understand that this is unacceptable."
Akindayomi says Miracle was left with his eyes swollen shut, which may interfere with his schoolwork and exams.
"I'm going to give the authorities their time to do what they got to do, but if they do not, we will cause disruption," Akindayomi said. "We are not animals and we refuse to accept to be treated as one."
