HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Brianna Quiroga with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - South Texas Chapter, discussed the Out of the Darkness Walk.
These walks are a nationwide initiative to combat the stigma associated with suicide.
Quiroga highlighted that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Texas, as per 2023 CDC stats.
She shared her personal motivation, losing two family friends to suicide in 2021, and how attending an AFSP event provided healing.
The walk is hosted by the South Texas chapter of AFSP, is free, and will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Vestal Park in Harlingen, located at 501 Lafayette Ave. Check-in time is 8 a.m. and the event begins at 9 a.m.
Participants are encouraged to wear purple and teal and bring items to honor their loved ones. Click here to register for this event.
