LA FERIA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The legacy of a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper who died in 2019 from injuries sustained in an on-duty shooting continues to be honored in the years following his death.
DPS is preparing to host its 5th annual obstacle course run to honor fallen DPS Trooper Moises Sanchez.
The course will consist of obstacles and physical fitness movements, including a sandbag carry, synchronized pushups, bear crawls, and synchronized air squats.
"We're looking for law enforcement, non-law enforcement, families, community, and people to come out to have fun," said Sgt. Guadalupe Casarez with Safety Education Service, South Texas Region.
The annual event will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the La Feria High School Stadium, 901 N. Canal St.
Registration is open to the public and all fitness levels.
"These events are for the community to come out and show support to the families of these fallen officers," Casarez continued. "It just shows them that we're still remembering their family members that paid the ultimate sacrifice."
All proceeds from the obstacle course run will be allocated to the Trooper Moises Sanchez Highway Memorial Fund.
The fund was created after a major roadway in McAllen was renamed and dedicated to Trooper Sanchez.
"They [funds] are going to be there in case we have other law enforcement officers or DPS personnel die in the line of duty. Those funds will be allocated to pay for those highway memorial signs."
The registration form for the upcoming event can be found by visiting the Texas DPS Officers Association website.
