MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A local non-profit is advocating for the senior community, one care package at a time.

Silver Ribbon, a non-profit out of McAllen, is working on its senior welfare care package project, to donate items to those in need.

Each care package consists of essential items including toiletries and cleaning items for older folks with a fixed income and/or a disability.

"I think that this package will help them so they don't have to make that expense," said Dee Ochoa, Program Director for Silver Ribbon.

Ochoa says the non-profit has received help from interns who study at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

"Our master level interns took the initiative to do this project. They went shopping for all the items and putting it together," Ochoa continued.

Silver Ribbon will be distributing 150 care packages which will be given on a first come, first served basis.

The non-profit will be handing out the packages at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 23 inside the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Building located on 1919 Austin Ave. in McAllen.

"This is a critical need for our elderly. They mostly manage on fixed income or no income at all. And with the rising cost of everything, I think that this is a very big help for
them," Ochoa said.
