No factual evidence found to determine Cameron County dogs were mistreated, investigation open

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County is responding after allegations online accused a dog owner of mistreating their animals.

Earlier this week, Animal Control Officers received a complaint about several dogs that were allegedly being hoarded at a residence and were in poor condition.

On Monday, the Cameron County Sheriff's office responded to the property in reference, located at the 4000 block of George Saenz Rd., in Brownsville, to assist Animal Control employees who were at the residence to investigate a possible Texas Health and Safety code.

A Cruelty to Animals investigation was opened for the case after Cameron County deputies collected pictures and video of the property and dogs. Their photo/video evidence was then forwarded to the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division for review.

Later Monday, investigators visited the property a second time and were accompanied by the owner of the dogs.

There were several breeds of dogs being kept in kennels and chain-link fenced dog pens. Authorities say the majority of dogs were Greyhounds, and while their "slim, trimmed bodies can be perceived as malnourished, ... they did seem healthy and active in plain sight."

Investigators noted that all the dogs had food, water and shelter and did not appear malnourished.

Cameron County stated that as of Wednesday, its investigation has not found any factual evidence that a crime has been committed. However, the case is still open.

The county is pending a consultation with experts in the matter, as well as with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office.

"The Cameron County Sheriff's Office takes all calls of animal abuse seriously," the county stated. "We will ensure that any form of animal abuse is investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We value the public's concerns regarding all animal abuse reports, and ask for their patience as we investigate them further. If any criminal acts were committed, we will hold those responsible accountable for their actions."
