EDINBURG, Texas – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg is one of the co-founders of the South Texas Alliance of Cities.

The group was officially launched in Harlingen in May, 2023. A couple of months earlier the cities held an exploratory meeting in Weslaco. At the meeting in Harlingen, mayors from the participating cities signed an eight-point compact.

STAC’s most recent quarterly meeting took place at the UTRGV School of Medicine in Edinburg. Following the meeting, Nirenberg gave interviews to news reporters.

He said: “San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley share a brotherhood and that’s something that we want to continue to underscore and work in an intentional way on the future of our communities.”

Asked what the top issues are for STAC, Nirenberg said: “We’ve had a lot of conversations about our workforce and education, transportation infrastructure, our our shared border, the solutions that that would help address some of the challenges, helping to advance the discussion on trade policy. All these things are critical to the future of the entire South Texas region, for San Antonio for the RGV, and for the entire United States.”

Nirenberg added: “San Antonio, RGV, together we are (the) South Texas United community. And so we want to make sure that when it comes to individual issues that we can be helpful with, we want to collaborate, use our strengths together. Wherever we can collaborate and leverage our strengths to help one another, we are going to do that.”
