The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley confirmed Thursday morning that nine of its international students have had their visas revoked, following a recent trend all over the nation in which the same is occurring without much warning or reason.
“UTRGV has been notified that the records of nine international students have been terminated in SEVIS by federal authorities,” Patrick Gonzales, vice president of university marketing and communications for UTRGV, said in a statement. “We have alerted the affected students and are committed to providing guidance within the parameters of law.”
These nine UTRGV students join the dozens from several universities across the state that have been removed from the SEVIS, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, database.
This comes after the Department of Homeland Security confirmed Wednesday that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services “will begin considering aliens’ antisemitic activity on social media and the physical harassment of Jewish individuals as grounds for denying immigration benefit requests.”
There’s been no word yet on how precisely the UTRGV students, or any others from throughout the nation fell into this criteria to warrant their visas being revoked.
