MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A new 23-acre nature park is slated to come to McAllen next fall, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Kappler Park, located on 8701 N. 23rd St., is McAllen's newest project to the growing list of city parks.

The $1.2 million project will feature various amenities including a lake, a bike and walking trail, an archery field and a campsite.

The City of McAllen presented a preliminary design of the park project during the 88th Legislative Session in Austin last year.

"Crafting a native space like Kappler Campgrounds provides the citizens and visitors a place to experience South Texas nature just minutes from their home," the city announced during the 88th Legislative Session.

According to McAllen Parks and Recreation, there are currently 98 city parks.

Additional features of Kappler Park include a fishing and boating pier, an eating area, a gazebo and a multi-purpose meadow.

"McAllen Parks and Recreation is committed to promiting an unsurpassed quality of life in McAllen through expanding and developing venues for family gatherings and recreation," the city said.

Construction for Kappler Park is slated to begin September 2024. The project is estimated to be complete by September 2025.
