Neighbors react to Weslaco homicide

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Community members in a Weslaco neighborhood are shaken up after a man confessed to killing a woman early this morning, and police found her body in a home on their street.

ValleyCentral spoke to neighbors, and they say they knew little about the people living in the home. They say the victim and suspect were new to the area.

“I think they had been there maybe three or four months. We didn’t know them and we never spoke. They kind of kept to themselves," Jose Ybarra, a neighbor, said.

Ybarra says he woke up to have his usual morning coffee, something he has been doing consistently for the past four decades.

It was then that he noticed a group of neighbors gathered outside, looking toward the corner of 11th and Georgia Street, where multiple police vehicles surrounded a home.

Ybarra says investigators asked if his cameras may have recorded a white vehicle in the area.

“My neighbor said a white car stopped near her house this morning. She didn’t recognize it and didn’t know why it was there," Ybarra said.

The home is now blocked by barrier tape, a swing and a toddler trailer can be seen outside.

Other neighbors, too shaken to go on camera, said they are deeply disturbed by what happened.

“That cloud is going to hang over us for a while. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It’s unfortunate when people turn to violence. Maybe it was something domestic, and whoever did this might’ve been under a lot of stress," another resident from the area said.

According to Weslaco Police, a man walked into the Alamo Police Department and confessed to killing a woman in Weslaco at around 2:30 a.m.

A few minutes later, officers arrived at the home and found a woman’s body inside.

"Preliminary findings indicate this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community. This remains an active investigation, and additional details will be provided as they become available," Heriberto Caraveo, Weslaco Police PD PIO, said.

Caraveo confirmed that more information will be released on Friday.

For now, neighbors are trying to process the violence that hit so close to home.

“I’m not scared, but it just reminds us we need to be aware of who lives around us. We know most of our neighbors, at least the ones close by," Ybarra stated.

Weslaco PD says the suspect is expected to be arraigned tomorrow.
