EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A mural honoring conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was vandalized Monday morning in Edinburg.

Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed on Sept. 10 after he was shot during a rally tour at Utah Valley University.

In the time since his passing, thousands of people nationwide have gathered to honor Kirk with prayer vigils and ceremonies.

A memorial mural was created by local artist Pop Culture shortly after the news of Kirk's death was announced.

The mural, located in a private property in downtown Edinburg, showed Kirk with a quote stating, "Will we change the fate of this nation, or will we let it remain in shackles!"

Now, the mural is vandalized with a phrase saying "We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act."

The Edinburg Police Department has been notified of the vandalism, and an investigation is underway to identify the people responsible.

This is a developing story.
