MISSION, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Harry Shimotsu Elementary in Mission has been recognized as a 2025 Lone Star Ribbon School.

The Lone Star Ribbon program, which replaces the National Blue Ribbon School designation, was announced by Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday. This program highlights schools that demonstrate outstanding academic performance and progress in closing achievement gaps.

Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Beto Hinojosa added, "This honor is a testament to the collaboration and perseverance of our staff, students, and community. We are proud to celebrate this achievement together."

The Lone Star Ribbon program is overseen by the state of Texas and reflects the priorities and values of Texas schools and communities. It aims to recognize schools that excel in academic performance and effectively close achievement gaps among students.

Several Valley schools also received the distinction, including La Joya ISD's Diaz-Villarreal Elementary, PSJA ISD's PJSA Thomas Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School, and Roma ISD's Delia Gonzalez Garcia Elementary and RT Barrera Elementary.
