A 24-year-old resident of Chiapas, Mexico is being charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter for a fatal crash that killed a father and his 4-year-old son last month.

Jesus Sebastian Lopez was arraigned Thursday by Justice of the Peace Andrew Gonzalez, who charged him with two counts of intoxication manslaughter with a motor vehicle, one count of intoxication assault with a motor vehicle causing serious bodily injuries, and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

This stems from a crash that occurred around 2:38 a.m. April 14 on U.S. 281, south of Farm-to-Market Road 1017 north of Edinburg.

During their investigation, the Texas Department of Public Safety found that Lopez, who was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu, was traveling north on US 281 on a southbound lane.

A white Chevrolet Colorado, occupied by a female driver and a child, veered off the roadway to avoid crashing into Lopez, causing the driver of the Colorado to lose control of the vehicle and roll over.

The driver and passenger were transported to DHR Health and were in stable condition.

At the time, a black Hyundai Tucson — occupied by Pharr residents Mark Anthony Alvarez, 32, and John Andrew Escamilla, 4 — was also traveling south on 281 when they crashed into Lopez’s vehicle.

This caused the Hyundai Tuscon to spin across the southbound lanes, causing it to crash into a white Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Alvarez and Escamilla were transported to DHR Health where they died due to their injuries.

Lopez was transported and booked at the Hidalgo County Jail.
